أبو دلامة هو زند بن الجون، شاعر عباسي مشهور، سمي بذلك لسواده، وكان أبوه زنجياً، أو حبشياً، نشأ أبو دلامة في الكوفة، لمع نجمه في عهد السفاح، وكان خلاعياً، كثير المجون، مثيراً للضحك بالجواب المسكت، والهجاء اللاذع، والنكتة الحارة، وكان واسع المعرفة بأخبار الناس، سريع البديهة، يحسن التخلص من المآزق الحرجة، وكثيراً ما اتهم بالزندقة لاستهتاره بأمور العباد، وكان الخلفاء يتجاهلون تصرفاته، لظرفه، وحسن أدبه، وجودة شعره، وكثرة مُلحه، وكانوا يجبرونه على مجالستهم للتمتع بأحاديثه، ولكنه كان ي بعض الأحيان يهرب منهم ليقصد حانات الخمارين ليشرب مع رفاقه. وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع "أكرم مطر" خلاصة ما وقف عليه من نوادر أبي دلامة هذه النوادر التي حملت الكثير من أخباره وعكست روح الفكاهة ونكهة الدعابة لديه، وهدفه بالإضافة إلى إمتاع القارئ ومؤانسته، إبعاد الملل، والسآمة عن نفسه من خلال قراءتها، بتعريف القارئ على بعض من الحكم الرشيدة للأبي دلامة، وعلى بعض من نوادره، طرائفه التي كانت مساراً لضحك وإمتاع الخلفاء. هذا وقد الحق المؤلف كتابه هذا ببعض في نوادر أبي الشمقمق شاعر هجاء أهل البصرة. لا يخلو أي تجمع إنساني من ذلك الشخص الطريف الذي وهبه الله البديهة والحساسية النقدية المرهفة، التي تجعله يلتقط أحداث الحياة وأحوالها العادية فتتحول على يديه إلى ضحك. وتاريخنا العربي، حافل بهذه الشخصيات المرحة الطريفة التي أبدعت ونسج الناس حولها الكثير من الطرائف والنوارد، المفعمة بروح النقد الاجتماعية والخلقي والأدبي والسياسي.
