"على باب الهوى!" سيرة ذاتية اختار لها صاحبها "صبحي فحماوي" شكلاً فنياً هو الرواية ففي كل صفحة من صفحاتها قصة مدهشة مثيرة، تولد منها قصة أخرى، فتتوالد الحكايات وتقفز الذكريات من ذكرى إلى أخرى، ومن مكان إلى آخر. يتوقف فيها عند محطات بارزة تبدو فيها ردة فعل المؤلفين على الأحداث والأشخاص، فهذه الرواية التي تسرد أحداث يوميات من عام 1982، تأخذ القارئ من مطار عمَان في الأردن، مرواً بمطار ميلانو في إيطاليا، إلى مطار ميونيخ، وتصور كيف كان المؤلف يسكن وزملاءه في مبنى "مؤتمر قادة شباب الأرياق في العالم" المدعو للمشاركة فيه، ثم تتجول الرواية لتصور مشاهد تجمع مؤلفها مع رفاق عرب وأجانب في ربوع ألمانيا ومدنها وقراها وقصورها ثم تعود لتتجول في بلدان عربية أخرى.
في هذا الفضاء تدور "على باب الهوى" فتعرض من يوميات الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية، وعن حرب "مناحيم بيغن" الذي في لحظات السرد نفسها يحتل لبنان كله، ويطحن المقاومة الفلسطينية عام 1982، وهنا شاهد وأحداث عن سيطرة أحزاب لبنانية قبل وبعد الحرب اللبنانية وهكذا يتقدم السرد ويدفع بعضه بعضاً، حتى نجد السارد/ المؤلف وقد وصل إلى حدود "باب الهوى" السورية في اشتياق إلى بلده، والتي يدخلها فرحاً وهو يغني قائلاً: "على باب الهوى دقيَت! وفتح لي الهوى مرَيت!" ويتابع حتى ينتهي من مغامرته/ رحلته الآورو آسيوية بسلام. هذه المواصفات تجعل الخطاب الروائي واقعياً، ينتمي إلى "الواقعية السحرية"، ويدخل مع الحكاية في علاقة تكامل، ما يجعل من "على باب الهوى" جانباً روائياً مضيئاً.
