"كانت الشمس في طريقها إلى الغروب حين وصلنا إلى البيت. شعرت برأسي ثقيلاً، وكنت متعبة من المشي بينما رائحة تراب العاصفة علقت بشعري وثيابي.. ورائحة أخرى تزكم أنفي؟! رائحة تجعلني أقلق وبي رغبة في البكاء وطرح الأسئلة... بي رغبة... ورميت نفسي في حضن جدتي. قلت في نفسي: الحمد لله أن لي جدة.
تكورت في حضنها، صرت كالعصفور الخائف، ككرة من الإسفنج كلما ضمتني أنكمش. انكمشت حتى خلت أنني تلاشيت. كنت أبحث عن شيء تحت غطاء رأس جدتي في راحة كفها البيضاء، بين ضفائرها السومرية. كنت أريد أن أتحول إلى خط وشم في جسدها، كحلاً في عينيها، محبساً فيروزياً في إصبعها. بكيت كثيراً، وطلبت منها أن لا تسمح لها باصطحابي مرة أخرى.
أمي، بذهولها المعتاد، تتابع لتعثر على خيط تمد من خلاله إصبع الاتهام إلى تلك المرأة، وجدتي تستجوبني والشك يعتريها كأنها أدركت ما بي:
-لماذا؟ ما الذي حدث؟ أخبريني.
لا أستطيع الإجابة لأنني لا أعرف ما الذي حدث! أريد أن أقول لها إنني أشم رائحة غريبة كلما خرجت مع هذه المرأة، وأخشى من السخرية! أريد أن أقول بأن وجوه من تلاقيهم لا تطمئن! وأخشى أن لا يصدقوا، أو يصفوني بالمبالغة والكاذبة، كنت أريد أن أقول إن أصدقاءها ليسوا جميلين، وإنني أخافهم! لكنني لا أجيد التعبير، وربما خفت من العقاب أو خشيت من تحذيراتها أو من مجهول.
تناولت عشائي بصمت تلك الليلة، ونمت على سرير جدتي، في سطح بيتنا كنت أتابع حركة النجوم وأعدها، بينما جدتي تحكي لي حكاية المرأة التي تحولت إلى سعلاة، وبالعراقية العامية (السعلوة)، والرجل الذي يخاف منها، فتسرف أبناءه، ويبقى يتوسل بها وهي تطالبه بالكثير كي تعيد إليه أبناءه".
