"لم أكن في الحديقة، ساعة استعاد الجناح هواءه. لم أكن شقيق الشجرة ولا ماء الساقية. ساعة ارتفاع يدك بالمناديل، وحين أدت إلينا العصافير، دمعاً، لم أكن فيّ، "وما درت أنت. كنت غصناً يسأل عن الرمل، كنت السنوات التي تكسرت والينابيع التي غاضت، كنت العيون التي تسأل النوم، كأس نعاس، وكنت اليد التي بدأت تمحي لكثر ما لوحت. لم أكن إلا ظل الأصابع التي تنسج الشراع، لم تكوني إلا الزورق الذي حملته طوال الصحراء، لم نكن إلا أرقين عبرتهما ساعة حلم... لهذا صحارانا موصلة بقوة موصولة بقرابة الرمل والسراب. أستميحك من أول شجرة، أو نجمة أغنت على مسائنا، من أول ماء نام عند يدينا، من أول أرق أثاره في فضائل ضبابي". من العراق أرض الشعر الخصبة يطلع صوت الشاعر باسم خضير المرعبي، في "العاطل عن الوردة" المجموعة الشعرية الفائزة بجائزة يوسف الخال للشعر عام 1988.
