أبوعُبيدة، مَعْمَر بن المثنّى (112 - 208هـ، 730 - 823م).
معمر بن المثنّى التيمي البصري. النحوي اللغوي، مولى بني تيم، تيم قريش. ولد أبو عبيدة في البصرة، وكان إباضيَّا وأخذ عن يونس وأبي عمرو، وهو أول من صنّف في غريب الحديث. وكان أعلم من الأصمعي وأبي زيد بالأنساب والأيام، وكان أبو نواس يتعلم منه ويصفه، ويذم الأصمعي، سئل عن الأصمعي، فقال: بلبل في قفص، وعن أبي عبيدة فقال: أديم طُوِي على علم. كان من أجمع الناس للعلم وأعلمهم بأيام العرب وأخبارها، وأكثر الناس رواية، قيل: كان أبو عبيدة عالمًا بالشعر والغريب والأخبار والنسب. أخذ عنه أبو عبيد، وأبو حاتم والمازني، والأثرم وعمر بن شبَّة. وله نحو مائتين من المصنفات منها: مجاز القرآن؛ إعراب القرآن؛ الأمثال؛ في غريب الحديث؛ ما تلحن فيه العامة؛ نقائض جرير والفرزدق؛ أيام العرب؛ الخيل، وغيرها.

هذا كتاب أخبار العققة والبررة ألفه أبو عبيدة معمر بن المثنى المتوفى سنة 210هـ ورواه أبو غسان رفيع بن مسلم العبدي. وهو يحكي قصة أقوام عقوا آبائهم فعاتبوهم على عقوقهم إياهم بقوم بروا آبائهم. وآخرون هاجروا من البادية إلى الحضر والأمصار وتركوا آبائهم فاشتاقوا إلى أولادهم فقالوا في ذلك شعراً وكان أبو عبيدة يبغض العرب ويطعن في أنسابهم ويمجد الفرس ويعلي من شأنهم وكتابنا هذا "أخبار العققة والبررة" لعل مما دفع أبا عبيدة إلى تأليفه ما فيه من رائحة الهجو للعرب الذين عرفوا قديماً بالبر والوفاء.
