ارتبط شوقي في بداية حياته بقصر الخديوي، فتفرغ للشعر والأدب، وتهيأت له أسباب الشهرة، ولكن هذه الفترة قصرت انطلاقته وتطوُّر أساليبه فجاء معظم شعره مدحاً للخديوي وبلاطه. ثم كان لمنفاه في الأندلس أثر كبير في حياته، حيث أتيحت له الخلوة إلى النفس والتأمل في أحضان الأندلس وفي تاريخها ومجدها، بعيداً عن حياته في القصر. وعند عودته إلى مصر استقبله الشعب استقبالاً رائعاً، مما هيأ له انفتاحاً جديداً بين قضايا الشعب بعيداً عن القصر. وراح يتغنى في كل مناسبة وطنية، هذه المرحلة صنعت مجده الشعري، وبويع أميراً للشعر، فذاع صيته وتدفق شعره، وكأنه أحس بمسؤوليته عن شعره وأدبه، فجاء هذا الكم الهائل من قصائده المتنوعة في المدح والوصف والرثاء والشعر التعليمي وشعر الأطفال، ومسرحياته الشعرية التي جاءت تبحث في التاريخ وتقص حكايات الزمن لأخذ العبرة والعظة. كثرت المؤلفات والمقالات عن جوانب حياة شوقي، ولم يترك الأدباء زيادة لمستزيد في الشعر والنثر، وقد جاءت المؤلفات بعناوين متنوعة وكلها تصب في بحر هذا الشاعر العظيم. ومع علمي بصعوبة البحث في حياة هذا الشاعر ، وتتبع ما كتبه المفكرون والنقاد ووفاءً لقدر شوقي، أضفت محاولتي هذه إلى ألوان أدبه وما أبدعه واستنتجه وما تنبأ به من خلال إنتاجه العظيم وغزارة ما تركه بأسلوب سهل، وحاولت جهدي أن يأتي الكتاب وفقاً لذوق الدارس والباحث، فتناولت خلاله حياة الشاعر وبداياته الأولى، ثم سفره لدراسة الحقوق وعلاقته بالقصر، ثم انتقلت إلى دراسة شعره في المنفى وإبداعاته بعد عودته إلى وطنه ثم أوضحت آراء النقاد ومواقفهم منه بعد وفاته، ثم تدرجت في الكتاب إلى العوامل التي أثرت في شعره وموهبته الشعرية، وجعلت عنواناً خاصاً لسينيته المشهورة وتناولتها بالتحليل والشرح. وأخيراً أثبت مختارات نثرية شملت خواطر أمير الشعراء ورسائله، ثم مختارات شعرية تمثل بعض جوانب شوقي الشعرية. وقد قمت بهذا الجهد راجياً أن أكون قد قدمت عملاً مفيداً للدارسين والباحثين، ومكملاً ما بدأه الأساتذة الأفاضل قبلي.
