إن أحمد شوقي هو الرمز الذي اتخذته مصر لتعبر عن واقعها في مرحلة النهضة، وبداية التجمع العربي، أو قل هو القيثارة التي عزفت نشيد الألم والأمل في مرحلة من مراحل البناء، والكاتب يتناول شخصية هذا الشاعر وذلك من خلال دراسة تحليلية، وقد احتاج هذا منه جهداً كبيراً فالشاعر شخصية كتب عنها الكثير، لذا وعند تصديه لهذه الدراسة كان لا بد أن تأتي الدراسة بالجديد محتوى وشكلاً، فحياة شوقي خصبة، ولكنها خصوبة ذهنية، فكان للكاتب أن سلك في دراسته هذه طريق الذكرى والاستيطان النفسي والجوار، وهو تشكيل فيه خاصيته الرواية اكثر مما فيه من خاصية المسرحية حيث يتعرف إليه القارئ من خلال هذه الكتابة إلى ملامحه صغيراً وشاباً وشيخاً، ويعيش معه أفراحه وأتراحه، ويدرك أبسط أحاسيسه وأعمق مشاعره، ويراه يحاور ويستمع، في البيت وفي الحياة، في المنفى وفي مصر، ولكن القارئ قلما يراه يخطو خطوة كبيرة أو يتحرك حركة مفاجئة، لأن شوقي هكذا في الحياة، يوم عرفه أبناء جيله.
