امتدت دراسة النشاط الفسيولوجي للدماغ فتوصلت إلى ما عبر عنه أحد العلماء المعاصرين بقوله (إذاً فالنشاط الفسيولوجي والكيميائي للدماغ وفقاً للنظرية العلمية الجديدة أمر ضروري للإحساس متزامن معه، ولكنه ليس الإحساس بعينه، والمادة وحدها لا تستطيع أن تفسر الإدراك الحسي.
فالنظرة القديمة تستطيع أن تتحدث عن الموجات الضوئية والتغيرات الكيميائية والنبضات الكهربائية في الأعصاب ونشاط خلايا المط، أما عن عمليات الإبصار والشم والذوق والسمع واللمس ذاتها فليس عند المادية ما تقوله، أن الإدراك الحسي حقيقة ولكنه ليس المادة ولا هو من خواص المادة وليس في مقدور المادة أن تفسره.
ومن هنا، يخلص شرنغتون إلى أن كون وجودنا مؤلفا من عنصرين جوهريين أمر ليس في تصوري ابعد احتمالاً بطبيعته من إقتصاره على عنصر واحد فالنظرية الجديدة تفترض وجود عنصرين جوهريين في الإنسان الجسم والعقل.
وقد قسمت هذه الدراسة إلى 3 فصول وهي: الفصل الأول: "مقاربات"، الفصل الثاني: "البحوث المعاصرة"، الفصل الثالث: "أمراض الدماغ"، الفصل الرابع: "البحوث المستقبلية".
