"قرطاجة أجمل المدن". في العام 264ق.م، تهدد القوة الرومانية المتعاظمة، من صقلية إلى إسبانيا، إشراقة الحضارة الفينيقية الجديدة، قرطاجة، سيدة البحر الكبير. يقتحم هذا الصراع ببسالة هميلقار برقا، القائد الشاب المنحدر من سلالة قرطاجية عريقة، ليكتب وسط جلجلة المعارك ونهيم الفيلة أسطراً من ملحمة يتابع مسيرتها ولده البكر، هنيبعل، أميناً للقسم الذي أداه أمامه. شكل هنيبعل برقا الشاب جيشاً من مئة ألف رجل، واتجه نحو الشمال، وهدفه: روما، العدو اللدود للقرجاطيين, وبعد اجتياز جبال الألب والبيرينيه مع رجاله وأحصنته وفيلته، وهزم الجيوش الرومانية في أكثر من موقعة، أصبحت أسوار روما تحت سطوته. كما الملاحم الكبرى، تلعب الأقدار دورها في مسيرة القائد القرطاجي، وتكون الكلمات الأخيرة لخصمه اللدود، سيبيون الأفريقي، الذي خاص وإياه صراعاً بلا رحمة استمر سبعة عشر عاماً، انتهت بهزيمته في زاما، مقياساً لنبل وفروسية وملحمية ذلك الصراع: "أنا أعلم بعد موتك أن آلافاً من الرجال والنساء من جميع أنحاء الأرض في الغرب والشرق سيبكونك. إنهم ليسوا فقط أنصارك الخجولين في قرطاجة، إنما هم أولئك الذين تجسد لهم البطولة والشهامة. هذا هو انتصارك الأحلى والأجمل وقد أحرزته على روما غير الجديرة بالمجد الذي حققته أنا لها". وبعد تدمير قرطاجة ورش أرضها المحروقة بالملح، يدون القائد القرطاجي الأخير حسد روبال، وريث هنيبعل، الذي سار على نهج عائلة برقا القديمة، في يومياته: "من يعلم؟ قرطاجة جديدة ستولد، ولن يكون هذا إلا تحقيقاً للعدالة، لأن اسم مدينتنا لا يمكن أن يختفي من ذاكرة البشر. وأفضلهم من سيعلنون أنهم ورثتنا والمكملون لنا".
