من المعروف أن الإمام علي عليه السلام جمع في علمه وسيرته مختلف علوم الحياة التي تهم الإنسان في الدنيا وتنفعه في الآخرة، وفي هذا الكتاب يتحدث الأستاذ عبد المحسن علي أبو عبد الله عن (الإمام علي) بوصفه أستاذاً للعلم والديمقراطية كما يشير إلى ذلك عنوان الكتاب. حيث يستفيد المؤلف من سيرة وكلمات أمير المؤمنين في الإطلالة على الواقع المعاش بنقد وحلَ. بعد أن تناول بعض جوانب التميز في حياة الإمام عليه السلام. وفي هذا السياق يعقد مؤلف الكتاب مقارنة بين نظام الحكم الذي أراده الله لأمته الإسلامية، وبين أنظمة الحكم اليوم مستحضراً موضوع الخلافة وتشريعاتها والحكمة من التشريع بالإستناد إلى قول الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم "الإسلام والسلطان أخوان توأمان، لا يصلح واحداً منهما إلا بصاحبه" في لفتةٍ إلى أحقبة الإمام علي بالخلافة بعد الرسول... بعد ذلك ينتقل الكاتب إلى حال الأمة بعد عصر الرسول منبهاً إلى أن سبب التخلف والتمزق والضياع الذي تعيش الأمة الإسلامية اليوم أنها ابتعدت عن القيادة الصحيحة القائمة على (كتاب الله الناطق) كما يقول الإمام علي عن نفسه. إلى ذلك يتطرق الكتاب إلى علوم الإمام علي عليه السلام في: علوم العربية وآدابها، والعلوم الطبيعية وغيرها مع الأدلة والبراهين على صحتها بقبسات من أقواله عليه السلام.
