أصول الفقه علم اختص به العرب دون غيرهم من الأمم وهو ينم عن ذهنيتهم وأسلوب تفكيرهم وحقيقة موقفهم من مشكلات النقل والعقل أو النص وما يستجد ويبتدع. وهو على ذلك خزان وفير للمصطلحات إذ أن المعاني المبتدعة وما يستجد في العقل أو يبتدع لا تتحقق إلا بانصبابها في أنواع من الألفاظ وأنماط من الصيغ. وقد نما هذا العلم وتطور حتى تشعب وازداد غنى بعد أخذ الفقهاء بقواعد علم المنطق فطبعوه بطبع العربية وقد تطورت بتطوره الكثير من الأبحاث الفكرية التي تشكلت في دائرة اللغة العربية وداخل إطارها البنائي. وبمرور الزمن غدا هذا العلم علماً قائماً بنفسه له حدوده ومعانيه وغاياته ومضماره. وكانت محصلة هذا النمو أبحاثاً مجردة وتركيبات منطقية ولغوية وعلاقات تجريد ذهني عبرت عن طبع هذه الذهنية التي أسسته. وعلى ضوء تلك الخصوصية، جاءت موسوعة مصطلحات أصول الفقه عند المسلمين في إطار عمل موسوعي ضخم يتوخى سبر معظم المصطلحات والألفاظ والأدوات اللغوية وجمعها وهو عمل غير مسبوق وهو يشمل أعمال أئمة الأصول على المذاهب الخمسة وهو مساهمة فعالة في عملية تنظيم الثروة المصطلحية واستخراجها من المصادر الأصلية ويفتح الباب واسعاً أمام الدارسين والباحثين لمواصلة الجهد في هذا المجال. وقد غطت هذه الموسوعة معظم مصطلحات علماء الأصول بدءاً بالشافعي وصولاً لبعض الأعمال الحديثة. وقد تم اختيار المصطلحات العامة ذات التعريفات المحتوية على مفاهيم فكرية أو أدوار لغوية أو أبعاد فقهية وعقائدية واستوفى كل مصطلح تفريعاته إذ أدرج هو ثم أدرجت الفروع عليه ورتبت المصطلحات بحسب لفظها وكما هو رسمها من غير عودة إلى الجذر أو أي طريق آخر. وجاءت المصطلحات أو ما سمي رؤوس الموضوعات نكرة، وأرفق كل شرح وتعريف للمصطلح بإشارة إلى اسم عالم الأصول - المؤلف - واسم الكتاب مرمزين وتم ضبط آيات القرآن الكريم وإثبات أرقامها، وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة لإسناد الحديث.
