من الأفكار الرائجة اليوم في علم النفس هو أننا بقدر ما يكون النشاط الذي نقوم به طبيعياً، وعادياً، ومألوفاً، بقدر ذلك نتأخر عن الشعور بما تتطلبه ممارسته، وبالمسلمات النظرية التي يتضمنها، وبمناهج ومفروضات العمل اللازمة لمعرفة الموضوعية والعلمية. وفي هذا المجال، ليس ثمة نشاط نألفه أكثر من النشاط الإجتماعي، مهما استطاع هذا التأكيد أن يبدو متناقضاً لأول وهلة، ففي كل لحظة نمارس النشاط الإجتماعي - علمياً - دون ان نشعر؛ إننا نعيش طبيعياً في الجو الإجتماعي كما نعيش طبيعياً في الجو المادي، دون أن ننتبه لوجود الأول أكثر مما ننتبه لوجود الآخر، إننا، كل يوم، نتسم مهمتنا الإجتماعية، ونخضع، جموعياً، لمقتضيات الأخلاق، والعادة، والمصطلح، ونستعمل مثل هذه المفاهيم: الحق، والمسؤولية، والقرابة، والمِلْكية، نبيع، ونشتري، ونتعاقد، وبالإختصار، إننا نسلك ونعمل بصفتنا كائنات إجتماعية دون أن نفّكر في ذلك، حتى أن نشاطنا الإجتماعي. هذا ينتهي بنا إلى أن يحجب عن أعيننا حياة ذاتنا الباطنية، والعضوية، وحتى ذاتنا النفسانية، إننا، ما لم نكن ممن يعبدون بطونهم، لنرى في الدعوة إلى وليمة ما، دعوة إلى مجلس الفة، وعملاً إجتماعياً كّلفنا به، أكثر مما نرى فيه إستدعاءاً إلى إشباع شهوتنا ونهمنا بين آخرين، أما في ما يختص بحياتنا النفسية الباطنية، فلسنا بحاجة إلى التذكير، بعد أبحاث برغسون وفرويد، بالحجاب الكثيف الذي يستطيع أن يلقيه عليها ذلك "النسيج المحبوك بمهارة الذي يشكل ذاتنا الإصلاحية"، أو "بالكبت" الذي تستطيع أن تفرضه عليها وظيفة "المراقبة" المنبثقة من الحياة في مجتمع، إن الحياة العضوية والحياة "الداخلية" لتمّحيان أمام الحياة الجموعية. لا عجب بعد ذلك إذا كانت الحياة الإجتماعية هي إحدى الحقائق الراهنة التي يتخذ العقل البشري حيالها، بصعوبة كلية، موقفاً مفكراً، ولا عجب إذا كان هذا العقل لم يجعل منها، حتى اليوم، موضوع بحث علمي دقيق، كيف توضحت وتحددت فكرة: علم إيجابي خاص بالحياة الإجتماعية، وأية مسّلمات بها أولية يتضمنها، وأية مناهج، وأية مفروضات توجيهية يستدعيها مثل هذا العلم، هذا ما تتوخى شرحه صفحات هذا الكتاب.
