يعتبر علم الاجتماع من العلوم الشاملة، ويتضمن معنى الشمولية هذا وجهين أساسيين، أما الوجه الأول فيرتبط بالناحية المعروفية، حيث يسعى علماء الاجتماع إلى بناء معرفة علمية تساعد في فهم وتفسير المجتمع وأجزائه وإمكانية التنبؤ بما يمكن أن تكون عليه، ثم الاستخدامات التطبيقية لهذه المعرفة. ويمثل موضوع العلم الوجه الثاني، والذي يشمل كل ما هو اجتماعي من مجتمع وجماعات ونظم وتنظيمات وعلاقات. ولما كان الوجه المعرفي مرتبطاً في بنائه على تحديد حقيقة الواقع الاجتماعي، فإن هذا يؤدي إلى أهمية المسألة المنهجية.
هذه الأبعاد الثلاثة من معرفة علمية وواقع اجتماعي ومسائل منهجية تشكل المحاور الأساسية لهذه العلم، كما تشكل جوهر أزمة هذا العلم وبهذا فإن أي كتاب عام في علم الاجتماع يواجه هذه التحديات، وأول هذه التحديات مشكلة الاختيار، أية معرفة؟ وأية مواضيع؟ وكيف يتم بناء المعرفة؟ ويتضمن الاختيار للمعرفة اختيار المفاهيم وارتباطاتها، كما يتضمن مشكلة الموضوع الاختيار من بين ميادين ومواضيع عديدة، لهذا يقوم كل مؤلف عام بعملية اصطفاء واختيار، مما يؤدي بالضرورة إلى افتراض إبداع في التناول. ولهذا فإن هذا المؤلف يمثل أحد البدائل الممكنة في تقديم علم الاجتماع.
وهدف الكتاب تزويد القارئ بالقدرة على الفهم العلمي للمجتمع، مع افتراض احترام خاص لقدرة الإنسان على التعلم، على أمل ربط الإنسان بهذا العالم الاجتماعي وتحفيزه على الاستمرار في السعي إلى مثل هذه المعرفة، وبهذا يمكن تلخيص الأهداف الأساسية لهذا الكتاب بما يلي: تقديم المفاهيم الأساسية وارتباطاتها واستخداماتها ويكونها اللبنات التي تشكل الأطر النظرية ومنظورات علم الاجتماع. التمثيل على التفسير والتأويل والتحليل في علم الاجتماع. الإشارة إلى بعض أهم المشكلات المعرفية في علم الاجتماع، تقديم صورة عن المجتمع بدراسة أهم الجماعات وأنواع العلاقات والنظم والتنظيمات الاجتماعية، الاعتماد على المصادر الأولية ما أمكن بقصد تعريف القارئ بها وتحفيزه على الرجوع إليها.
