فعلم الإجتماع لا يمكن أن يؤدي وظائفه، دون تطور أساليبه المنهجية والبحثية، ودون قدرته على وصف النظم الإجتماعية وتحليلها، هذه النظم التي يتكون منها البناء المؤسسي للمجتمع.
وكما أشار بيتر بيرجر (Peter Berger) إلى أن علم الإجتماع هو شكل من أشكال الوعي والإدراك الكاملين، إذ يساعدنا على تحليل وتفسير خصائص البيئة الإجتماعية بطريقة عميقة وواضحة، فهو يعرفنا على عوالم الغنى والفقر، والقوة والضعف وسكان الأحياء الشعبية ومدمني المخدرات والمتدينين، كما يعرفنا أيضاً على تفضيل وجهات نظر الآخرين على وجهات نظرنا.
فقد جاء هذا الكتاب... ليحاول إلقاء الضوء على المتغيرات التي طرأت على النظم الإجتماعية وكذلك النظريات، مع إستعراض أهم المدارس الفكرية والنظرية التي يعرفها علماء الإجتماع بعد معالجتها.
