في هذه الدراسة وقع اختيار الدكتور جوزف طانيوس لبس على دراسة موضوعي الحب في تجارب الأدباء: طه حسين، وتوفيق الحكيم، وعائشة عبد الرحمن، وميخائيل نعيمة، وتوفيق يوسف عواد، وليلى عسيران، بوصفهم روًاد السيرة الذاتية في الأدب العربي الحديث، ومن رواد نهضته الأدبية، وتمثل تجربة كل منهم لوناً من ألوان الحب ووجهاً من وجوه الموت. من هنا كان تناول المؤلف موضوعي الحب والموت من خلال سير ذاتية لشخصيات أدبية معروفة بمعاناتها وإبداعاتها ورياديتها، إنما يعني تناول هذين الموضوعين بـ التجربة الحيَة والتأمل الفكري الخلاق. أما عن اختياره أديبتين إلى جانبهم (بنت الشاطئ وليلى عسيران) فهدفه دراسة تجربة المرأة العربية في كتابة السير الذاتية، ودراسة تجربتها الذاتية في الحبَ والموت، وأما اختياره أدباء من مصر وآخرين من لبنان، فليس له من تسويغ سوى أن مصر ولبنان هما مهدا النهضة العربية الحديثة ومركزاها. وانعكاس هذا الواقع على تطوَر السيرة الذاتية. أما عن تقسيم الدراسة فقد استهل المؤلف عمله بمدخل إلى السيرة الذاتية، فعرَف مفهومها، وقارن بينها وبين أخواتها أي تلك الكتابات الذاتية التي تأخذ من حياة كاتبها وشخصيته موضوعاً لها، وبحث الأسباب الدافعة إلى كتابة السيرة الذاتية، باعتبار أنها يمكن أن تشكل مدخلاً إلى موضوعي الحب والموت دافعان قويان إلى تدوين السيرة الذاتية... وفي وهاد هذه الرؤية تم توزيع الدراسة على أبواباً ستة أفرد المؤلف لكل واحد من الأدباء باباً، وقد سبقها بتمهيد يوَطئ للموضوعين المنوي معالجتهما (الحب والموت)...
