نقرأ في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من الشهادات والمقالات التي كتبها الروائي الجزائري بشير مفتي في فترات حياته حول عدة مواضيع وقضايا وهي المقالات التي تم نشرها في عدد من الجرائد والمجلات العربية والجزائرية، أطلق عليها "سيرة طائر الليل"، حيث تتناول سيرته الأدبية والفكرية المميزة على مدار السنوات التي لم يكتب فيها روايات وقصصاً قصيرة، وكذا نصوص تم نشر بعضها والبعض الآخر لم ينشر بعد، الى أن جاء هذا الإصدار الأدبي وفتح له الباب للخروج الى القارئ العربي عامة والجزائري خاصة. في المضمون نقع في الكتاب على جملة من المقالات المهمة التي تتعلق برأي بشير مفتي في بعض القضايا المحورية في الثقافة العربية كالحداثة والحرية والمثقف، الاستبداد، التاريخ، وصولاً الى ثورات الربيع العربي الأخير، تناولها المؤلف بروح موضوعية ونقدية، لم يكن الهدف منها المدح أو العقاب ولكن بالنظر الى كونها شكلت هاجساً يطرح من خلال الاسئلة والاستفسارات حول تلك الوقائع والأحداث، بما تحمله من جديد أو قديم، بهدف تنوير القارئ من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى بفرض قراءة وفهم كواليسها، باعتبار أن ما تخفيه من ظواهر وأسرار، لا بد أن يناقش، هذا ويضم الكتاب أيضاً مقالات حول الأدب تعبر عن ذكريات مفتي مع الكتابة وعشقه لخير جليس في الأنام..
