ألان تورين Alain Touraine : يعتبر ألان تورين من بين أهم علماء الإجتماع المعاصرين. وهو فرنسي الأصل، من مواليد سنة 1925، عمل باحثا في المجلس الوطني للبحوث الفرنسية حتى سنة 1958، أسس مركز دراسات علم الإجتماع العمل في جامعة تشيلي في سنة 1960، وأصبح باحثا في إيكول "إيتوديس" في العلوم بباريس، إشتهر بتطويره مفهوم مجتمع ما بعد الصناعي، إهتم بدراسة الحركات الإجتماعية، وكتب الكثير في هذا المجال، ويحظى تورين شهرة واسعة في أمريكا اللاتينية وفي أوربا، حصل في سنة 1998، على جائزة "أمالفي Amalfi"، الأوربية لعلم الإجتماع والعلوم الإجتماعية، وفي عام 2004 تلقى توورين درجة الدكتوراه الفخرية من جامعة "فالبرايسو" في تشيلي، وفي سنة 2006 تلقى درجة الدكتوراه الفخرية من الجامعة الوطنية في "سانت مارتن"، وفي ديسمبر 2006 من جامعة كولومبيا الوطنية، وفي سنة 2008 تلقى أيضا درجة دكتوراه فخرية من جامعة "مايوردي سان ماركوس" في ليما. ألان تورين تأثر منذ شبابه بأشكال عديدة من الرفض السياسي، وبناء عليه، جعل تورين سوسيولوجيا مناضلا بكتاباته التي تتميز بجدة منظورها إذا لم نقل منظورها الثوري. لألان تورين عدة مؤلفات فعلا أغنى بها المطبخ السوسيولوجي والتي من بينها: نقد الحداثة سنة 1998 Critique de la modernité، براديغم جديد: من أجل فهم عالم اليوم 2005، الحركات الإجتماعية، ما هي الديمقراطية؟، وعدة مؤلفات أخرى

من خلال دراسته تاريخ وتطوّر مفهوم الديموقراطية وتطبيقاته، يحاول ألان تورين أن يعرّف المفهوم على نحو إيجابي. فالسوسيولوجي الفرنسي الكبير يشرح، بوضوح، لماذا ينبغي أن لا نفهم الديموقراطية كمجرد حكم للأكثرية، وكيف أن العملية الديموقراطية مرشحة لأن يهدّدها عدم التسامح، دينياً كان أو إثنياً أو قومياً. فالديموقراطية لا يمكن أن تنهض على القوانين وحدها، كما يرى تورين، بل ينبغي تأسيسها، أيضاً، على تطور التربية السياسية التعددية وعلى قلقٍ ما حيال العنف، فضلاً عن مفهوم حديث للمساواة يميزها، جوهرياً، عن النظرة التوتاليتارية إليها. إن الديموقراطية، في رأيه، نظام من التوسط الدائم بين الدولة والعناصر الناشطة اجتماعياً في المجتمع. والعالم العربي الذي يتعرض نسيجه الاجتماعي، الآن، لعدد كبير من التحديات، ربما كان في أمسّ الحاجة إلى ما يطرحه ألان تورين ويثيره.
