شبه العولمة أن تكون محور النشاط الإنساني، إذ ليس للإنسان نشاط فكري أو مادي يمعزل عن تأثيراتها، فقد تدخلت في أنماط حيوات الشعوب وممارساتهم الفكرية والدينية والثقافية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية واللغوية. ولعل غايتنا من هذا الكتاب أن ندل على أهم تأثيراتها اللغوية مستهدين بأمثلة من المشهد اللغوي العربي. فقد أثارت العولمة عدداً كبيراً من القضايا اللغوية التي كانت موجودة ولكن حدتها اشتدت مع استعار موجة العولمة، فقد أيقظت هيمنة الإنجليزية، وهي أداة العولمة، وعي الشعوب الأخرى بانتمائها القومي من حيث إن اللغات ملاذ هذه الشعوب، وهي حامل الثقافة ومخزنه. كما أثارت العولمة في السياق نفسه أ فكاراً تتصل بالتمييز العنصري والعرقي ونزعات تفوق جنس على آخر، ولعل ذلك يبدو واضحاً في الدعوة إلى لغة عالمية والدعوة إلى أن تكون الإنجليزية هي هذه اللغة العالمية! ويمكن القول إن تأثيرات العولمة اللغوية، على التعميم، تتوزع جانبين مهمين: أولهما: بنية اللغة الداخلية، نحوها وصرفها ومعجمها ودلالتها. وثانيهما: موقف الناطقين باللغة من لغتهم ومقارنتها بالإنجليزية.
