"عنترة بن شداد" هو أحد أمثلة الفتوة والبطولة العربية في عهد ما قبل الإسلام، وعلم شامخ من أعلام القوة والنضال والصبر والجلد عند استعار وطيس الوغى واشتعال نار الحرب والقتال، لقد كانت حياة أسد البيداء، وقاهر الصحراء سلسلة انتصارات رائعة سطرت أمجاده في التاريخ بحروف متألقة، وجعلته أسطورة من الأساطير تتحدث عنها الأجيال وتفاخر بها القرون، ولا مراء مطلقاً في أن عنترة كان أشهر فرسان العرب في الجاهلية، وأبعدهم صيتاً وأسيَرهم ذكراً، بما كان من أحسن العرب شيمة ومن أعزهم نفساً، وأجودهم بما ملكت يده، وأوفاهم بالعهد وأنجزهم للوعد، نظمت فروسية عنترة أشعاره، وصدقت أشعاره فروسيته، شاعر ينطق لسانه عن سنانه، وتتجلى مآثره في بيانه، ويضرب المثل في شجاعته وأخلاقه، وفي شدوته ولينه وفي قتاله ونسيبه.
هذه الشخصية الفذة الشجاعة هي موضوع البحث في هذا الكتاب الذي يسطر فيه المؤلف منشأة وبيئة وعشرة، وشخصية وبطولة هذا البطل المغوار وإذا كان المؤلف قد احتفى بعنترة وخلده كبطل فإن لموهبته الشعرية نصيبها في هذا الكتاب الذي يضم اشهر ما دون في الوصف، والمدح والهجاء والرثاء والغزل، والحكم والمواعظ وغيرها إلى جانب تدوينه لتفاصيل ملحمته الحماسية التي تعد من ملاحم العرب الشهيرة، وقد بين فيها حادثة داحس والغبراء.
