"تعالوا نوغل في الماضي الذي تدوي فيه الأساطير الملفعة بالحرير والموشحة بالغموض تعالوا نجوب طرق القوافل القديمة ومشية الإبل المتهادية تهدهد رقادنا. ولا تخشوا الظمأ، فمن حيث لا ندري تنبجس الواحات. تعالوا نتذوق خمرة طعمها أسطوري تغري شفة كل إنسان جسور. تعالوا نصغي لحكايا الربابة وهي تسردها برعشتها البرية".
الصحراء هو ذاك المكان الفسيح الأرجاء، الممتد إلى اللانهاية. والمسكون بهواجس داعبت خيال لينا هويان الحسن، حركت مكامن الإبداع لديها، فتنشد تلك الصحراء بغاية سرد حكايات انتزعتها من ذاكرة البادية، ذاكرة حفلت بأحداث واغتنت بشخصيات مكرسةً صوراً للبادية ذات سمات اجتماعية سياسية اقتصادية وأدبية، تعكسها الكاتبة بأسلوب أدبي رائق، يتذوقه القارئ وكأنه يرتشف قطرات ماء من نبع من ينابيع البادية صاف.
"مرآة الصحراء" كتاب توثيقي مصوّر عن حياة البدو، تحديداً في بلاد الشام. يسلط الضوء على عاداتهم وتقاليدهم في الحرب والسلم مع صور ملونة توضح ذلك.
أيضاً يقدم معلومات شيقة عن بعض المستشرقين الذين زاروا الشرق. مثل الكابتن ولفرد بلنت وزوجته الليدي آن بلنت. والليدي ايستر ستانهوب، والليدي جين دغبي.
معظم الصور التي يتضمنها الكتاب التقطها مستشرقين أجانب في أوائل القرن العشرين. وهي صور نادرة: للعُطْفة مثلاً والصيد والجنيبة، وقد تم معالجتها بتلوينها لتتوضح أكثر.
