كتب الأمثال التراثية-على كثرتها-لا تسعف القارئ العادي بل قد لا تسعف الآخرين. تكمن الصعوبة في الحصول على بعضها، وتعدد طرق ترتيب الأمثال فيها. من أجل هذا كله جاء هذا المعجم العصري المختصر والشامل ليحقق اكتفاء ذاتياً للقارئ والباحث. وهو يتميز بأنه معجم عصري في ترتيب الأمثال التراثية هجائياً وفق الحرفين الأول والثاني للكلمة الأولى في المثل. وهو معجم مختصر لأنه خلا من قصص الأمثال. وهو شامل لأنه حاول أن يتتبع الأمثال في مظانها المتعددة من كتب الأمثال والمعاجم وكتب الأدب والموسوعات وكتب النحو واللغة، فضم حوالي سبعة آلاف مثل. وقد روعي في كل مثل: نصه مضبوطاً ضبطاً تاماً، وذكر مصادره المختلفة وأجزائها وصفحات وروده فيها، مع الإشارة إلى الاختلاف في الصيغة إن وجد، وشرح المفردات الصعبة، وشرح الأعلام، ولمن يضرب المثل، وأخيراً الإشارة إلى ما يماثله من الأمثال أو يعاكسه. وزيادة في الفائدة ذيل هذا المعجم بفهارس لتكون عوناً للباحث في دراسة ظاهرة في الأمثال. وهكذا فإن قيمة هذا المعجم أنه ليس معجماً يسرد الأمثال فحسب بل هو معجم للأمثال شعراً جاءت أم نثراً، وللأقوال المأثورة، ويعرج على استعمالات خاصة للغة، وهو في الوقت نفسه معجم لغة لأنه يشرح آلاف الألفاظ، وهو معجم خاص بعبارات فصيحة سائرة يحفظها المتعلم ويوظفها.
