منذ أكثر من ربع قرن والدكتور "عفيف عبد الرحمن" يعيش مع فترة ما قبل الإسلام، قارئاً ومدرساً وباحثاً وكلما انقضت السنين شعر أن في هذا العصر ما يستحق أن يبحث ويدرس، وأن أموراً كثيرة ما زالت مستغلقة وتستحق البحث والدراسة، ودواوين حققت ولكنها غير مخدومة بصورة جيدة، ودراسات فجة أو مسطحة بحاجة إلى مزيد من التعمق، ومن أجل هذا كله سعى منذ عام 1979 تحديداً إلى الاسهام في حصر الدراسات في مجال الأدب الجاهلي، فنشر غير عمل في صورة بحث أو كتاب، وفي كل مرة كان يضيف ويتابع ويغير في الطريقة والمنهج بناءً على خبرة متراكمة في ميدان التدريس الجامعي.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليحاول حصر هذه الدراسات كلها ما وسعه ذلك، من رسائل جامعية وكتب وبحوث ومقالات، مذيلاً بفهارس تمكن الباحث من الحصول على ما يريد بسرعة وفي وقت يسير. كما وأضاف لكل قسم جمعه في الكتاب نبذة قصيرة حدد من خلالها إطار البحث الذي هو بصدده لتحديده زمانياً ومكانياً وبيئياً.
فعلى سبيل المثال قدم للقسم المخصص بجمع كافة جهود القدماء في تدوين الشعر الجاهلي بمقدمة قصيرة تحدث فيها عن جزيرة العرب وسكانها وملكتهم الشعرية والأدبية، بعد هذا تتبع جهود العلماء والدارسين والباحثين حول الأدب الجاهلي مثبتاً كافة ما وقف عليه من مؤلفات ظهرت في تلك الفترة، وهكذا جاء الكتاب متضمناً عدة أقسام غطب كافة المؤلفات التي وقعت تحت يدي المؤلف عن الأدب الجاهلي.
