الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا محمد الأمين وعلى إخوانه الأنبياء والمرسلين وآل بيته الطيبين وأصحابه الطاهرين وأزواجه الطاهرات أمهات المؤمنين وعلى من سار على هداهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين وبعد: رغم التطور الحضاري والعلمي عبر العصور ظلت فئات ذوي الحاجات الخاصة تعاني من مختلف المشاكل الاجتماعية والنفسية، وظل المجتمع يرفض الاعتراف بحاجاتهم الملحة ولم يسعَ جاهداً لتطوير برامج تربوية وأساليب علاجية لخدمتهم فقد يكون السبب لأنه يتصور أن هذه الفئات لا تستفيد من هذه المحاولات، والبحوث لا زالت تجري لحل كافة المشاكل ذات العلاقة في هذه الفئات وتطوير واستحداث برامج وأساليب علاجية لذلك، ونود الإشارة هنا إلى أن جهوداً عمليةً مضنية وطويلة ابتدأت تقريباً مع بداية القرن العشرين للتوصل إلى حل لما تبقى من المشاكل المصاحبة لتلك الإعاقات. إن عملية التعلم عملية لا تتوقف عند حدود مؤسسات ومراكز التربية الخاصة حتى وإن كانت تلك المؤسسات والمراكز تتمكن من تحقيق الأهداف الموضوعة لتربية الأطفال ذوي الحاجات الخاصة وتوجيه نموهم التوجيه السليم، فالتعلم يحدث في كل مكان، فهو يحدث في البيت حيث نتعلم الكلام وكثيراً من العادات والسلوكيات والقيم والاتجاهات،كما يحدث التعلم من الاحتكاك بظروف الحياة العامة، وانفرادية المدرسة بعملية التعلم ينبغي أن تنحو منحى العملية التنظيمية وتحديد أنماط السلوك القيمية والعمل على نمو هذه الأنماط تحت إشراف وتوجيه، وأن تضع البرامج التربوية والأساليب العلاجية والخطط الوقائية لتجنب المضاعفات المحتملة لتلك الإعاقات والسلوكيات غير المرغوبة والتي يلتقطها الأطفال نتيجة الظروف المحيطة وهنا تبرز أهمية البرامج التربوية والأساليب العلاجية، إضافة إلى الأهمية الأكاديمية التي ينبغي أن تكون على قدم وساق للعمل على استمرار النمو في الطريق الصحيح.
