يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوء على كواليس الحملة الفرنسية على مصر، والدوافع التي قادت الفرنسيين إلى اختبار مصر هدفاً لحملتهم، بما فيها التقارير والمدونات والكتابات التي كشفت عن حال الامبراطورية العثمانية، والفوضى المنتشرة في البلاد. وعلى ذلك، فإن الإستيلاء على مصر برأي هؤلاء أمر لا مفرّ منه لخدمة المصالح الفرنسية إذا بات مقرراً انهيار الأمبراطورية العثمانية.
وفي الكتاب سرد تاريخي لوصول الحملة الفرنسية إلى شاطىء الإسكندرية في الأول من تموز 1798م. وكانت تتألف من نحو 55 سفينة بحرية على متنها حوالي 36 ألف مقاتل، استعداداً لخوض المعركة. يتبع ذلك مشهداً لأوضاع صعيد مصر قبيل مجيء الحملة الفرنسية، إجتماعياً وإقتصادياً وإدارياً، والدور الذي لعبه الصعيد في أحداث مصر السياسية في تلك الفترة. إلى ذلك يذكر الكتاب كيفية تشكيل نابليون لحملته تحت غطاء محكم من السرية، وكيف انتقل بقواته من طولون إلى مصر، ومواجهته المماليك، وعلى رأسهم مراد بك. وأصرّ نابليون للجنرال "ديزيه" إخضاع الوجه القبلي "للصعيد" لسلطته ومعركة سدمنت وهزيمة مراد بك وحلفاؤه من أهالي الصعيد وحكم الفرنسيين لمنطقة بني سويف والفيوم، وحَرْق مدينة أنبود وتدميرها، واحتلال الفرنسيين لمدينة القصير على ساحل البحر الأحمر عام 1799.
أيضاً، يستعرض الكتاب الأوضاع الإقتصادية للصعيد في عهد الحملة الفرنسية حيث استخلصت المؤلفة في نهايته أن كل الإجراءات التي اتخذها الفرنسيون لتنظيم ملكية الأراضي في المنطقة وزراعتها استهدفت الحصول على أموال تسدّ بها الحملة بعض أوجه نفقاتها، مع الإشارة إلى وضع القوى الإجتماعية في صعيد مصر من مماليك وفلاحين وأقباط، وإبانة أوجه الإتفاق في ما بينهما طبقياً واختلافها طائفياً، وتأثير كل منها على مجريات الحملة الفرنسية، وتأثرها بها، حيث اعتبرت المؤلفة في ختام الدراسة "لا بد من القول إنه إذا كانت الحملة الفرنسية قد فشلت في تحقيق أهدافها العسكرية، فإنها نجحت على الصعيد الثقافي في كشف صورة الحضارة في مصر أمام الإنسانية كلها".
