الأسرة هي نواة التنظيم الاجتماعي، ومركز النشاطات الاقتصادية في المجتمع قديماً وحديثاً، تتمحور حولها حياة الأفراد، وانطلاقاً من ذلك هناك أهمية للدراسة السوسيولوجية للأسرة باعتبارها أحد الأنظمة الرئيسية في المجتمع، وعلاقتها بالتحديث والتحضر والتطور، وتعتمد هذه الدراسة على النظر للأسرة على ضوء التكوينات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية من ناحية والعوامل والمتغيرات الثقافية والقيمية والديموجرافية من ناحية أخري .إن هناك اتفاق على أن التغيرات التي تتعرض لها الأسرة قد أحدثت تغيرات أساسية في بنيتها ووظائفها التقليدية. ومن هنا تأتي الأهمية النظرية لتلك الدراسة من حيث كونها دراسة سوسيولوجية تتناول الأسرة وأدوارها ووظائفها في المجتمع، وتحاول رصد التغيرات التي تعرضت لها الأسرة في سياق عصر العولمة وعملياتها المختلفة
