على الرغم من أن الربع الخالي، هي الرواية الأولى للكاتب السعودي عابد خزندار، فإنها تبدو مكتوبة بتأنٍ وخبرة كاتب عايش مراحل متعاقبة في زمن حدوثها؛ فالتاريخ يعيد نفسه بأشكال مختلفة، والصراع بين الحق والباطل مستمر بأسلحة مختلفة، والبحث عن الحقيقة طالما كان هاجس الكثيرين من الكتّاب العرب، وإن تمظهر بأسلوب الفن. ففي الربع الخالي وفي صحرائها الغامضة يلتقط الروائي لنا كنوزاً ليصوغها قصصاً سردية يفتح من خلالها مناخات جديدة، تشكل صدى لدينامية فضاء عربي في مرحلة التحوّل (الستينيات من القرن العشرين) إلى فضاء أكثر ضيقاً؛ والمكان الروائي هنا هو (المعتقل)، لكنه فضاء يتسع؛ لتمر من خلاله قضايا تاريخية كبرى. لطالما ظلت خافية على الجيل المعاصر، وقد اختار لها الروائي نقطة الإنطلاق من (أم المدائن)، مكان مولد بطل الرواية، لتنتهي في الغرف الضيقة في السجون. فحكايات خزندار هنا تكتب تاريخاً سردياً، وقد انسلت بشخصيات متنوعة، ربما يعرفها الكثيرون، لكن الروائي لم يذكر أسماءها؛ وإنما رمز للشخصية الأولى باسم (عامر الخماش) شخصية القاتل، الذي ورث أموالاً كثيرة من والده الثري، بدّدها بلعب القمار والبارات. ارتكب جريمة قتل أحد العمال والضحية هو عامل مصري خرج ذات يوم في صحراء الربع الخالي، وصدمه عامر، وحاول نقله، لكنه مات ... قتل كمجهول ودفن في الصحراء، وفي هذا، إشارة عن الوضع المأساوي للداخل المصري في نهاية الستينيات بعد حرب أكتوبر. وهو بالضبط الزمن الذي تدور حوله أحداث الربع الخالي، أحداث كثيرة تتزاخم في الرواية، وحركات وأفكار، تمنح العمل نبضاً واقعياً مقنعاً، مع كل ما يستتبع ذلك من تجربة شخصية معاشة أو متخيلة، تهدف إلى إعادة تخليق الكاتب لنفسه وتبيان لرؤيته كذلك ...
