حملت بدايات الألفية الثانية الكثير من المتغيرات في واقع تركيا في الداخل وفي موقعها في المعادلات الإقليمية والدولية. في الداخل انفرد حزب ذو جذور إسلامية، هو حزب العدالة والتنمية بالسلطة التشريعية والتنفيذية في سابقة تاريخية. فانطلقت نقاشات جادة وحادة حول ثوابت تاريخية تمس العناوين الأكثر حساسية، العلمانية والإسلام، السلطة السياسية والعسكر، المسألة الكردية ووحدة التراب التركي، المسألة الأرمنية-المواطنة الكاملة وحقوق الأولويات ("القنبلة" العلوية مثلاً)، الحريات والديموقراطية. في الخارج كانت ذروة التحول في أحداث 11 أيلول حيث فتحت الحرب على "الإرهاب" وبذريعتها انكشف العالم الإسلامي وأضحى تحت التهديد بالاحتلال العسكري المباشر. وهنا اختلف "الإسلام التركي" عن نظرائه في العالمين العربي والإسلامي حيث أعدت الولايات المتحدة الأميركية لتركيا دوراً ريادياً بما سمي مشروع الشرق الأوسط الجديد. فيما قرر الاتحاد الأوروبي في 17 كانون الأول 2004 بدء مفاوضات العضوية مع أنقرة. بين دفتي هذا الكتاب نصوص وعدد كبير من الدراسات للباحث المتخصص في الشؤون التركية محمد نور الدين. هي أشبه بلوجة البازل المتعددة الأشكال والألوان والأحجام والتي حين اكتمالها تقدم صورة حاول المؤلف أن تكون شاملة ودقيقة وموضوعية.
