يحتوي هذا الكتاب على رسائل بعثت بها خيالًا السيدة كاثرين براننج إلى السيدة ماري مونتاجيو عام (1689م- 1762م)، تستعرض فيها الانطباعات التي أخذتها عن تركيا والأتراك طيلة ثلاثين عامًا كاملة كانت تتردد فيها على تركيا.
والسيدة ماري مونتاجيو هي زوجة سفير انجليزي عاش في تركيا في القرن الثامن عشر. قضت معه في تركيا ثلاثة عشر شهرًا ترسل فيها لصديقاتها وأسرتها رسائل تفصل فيها مشاهداتها في هذا البلد، وقد نشرت هذه المراسلات بعد وفاتها بعنوان "رسائل السفارة". وأهم ما تتميز به هذه الرسائل أنها تنقل الأحداث والوقائع كما هي دون مواربة.
هذا وقد بدأت رحلة كاثرين براننج في تركيا والتي استمرت قرابة ثلاثين عامًا بعد رؤيتها في الفصل الدراسي بفرنسا صورة لمدرسة "جوك" الكائنة في "سيواس" بتركيا.
ورغم أن هناك ثلاثة قرون بين الرحالتين الغربيتين إلا أن مشاهداتهما تلتقي في تصوير تركيا كيف كانت وكيف هي الآن. وتشرح الكاتبة سبب تحريرها لهذا الكتاب فتقول:
"وهذه الرسائل هي تعبير بسيط عن مدى حبي وتقديري لتركيا وشعبها، وردًا على آلاف الأكواب من الشاي التي قدمت إلي خلال ثلاثين سنة قضيتها في تركيا".
