حين نَشر يوري بونداريف (1924) عمله الروائي"الثلج الحار"عام 1969، كان يقدّم صورة لم يعرفها العالم لمعركة ستالينغراد. بانوراما من داخل صفوف الجنود، لا تشبه الحكايات الأسطورية الضخمة والعامة، التي كتبها المؤرخون لأغراض سياسية أو ترويجية لبروباغاندا ما. أتت الرواية، لتكون عبارة عن نتف مركّبة من يوميات الطريق إلى ستالينغراد والانخراط في المعركة، على أرضية سردية أدبية، تلتفت بكثير من الاهتمام إلى العمق الإنساني للشخصيات، العسكرية بمجملها. لكن تجربة الفتى بونداريف في ستالينغراد لن تشكل مادةً لأول أعماله الأدبية. فبعد الحرب، سيتجه إلى دراسة الأدب في"معهد غوركي"، لينشر مجموعة قصصية عام 1953 بعنوان"على ضفة النهر الكبير"، فتكون أول إصداراته الأدبية. ويتفق النقاد على أنها أفضل ما كتب بونداريف. لقد كان واحداً ممن يمثلون تياراً جديداً في الكتابة الروسية بعد الحرب.
