البعض يتناول تاريخ مصر بالحقب الزمنية، أي الفترات الزمنية فيقول مثلاً تاريخ مصر الفرعونية، تاريخ مصر الإسلامية في عهد الراشدين، تاريخ مصر في عهد الدولة الأموية، وهكذا، وللحقيقة هذا هو الأساس في دراسة التاريخ، لكننا لما كنا نهدف إلى بيان عظمة ومكانة من كانوا في تلك الحقب وخاصة الإسلامية منها.
ومن هذه الشخصيات الواسعة الثراء والمفعمة بالأحداث العظام في فترة من فترات التاريخ الإسلامي هي شخصية "الظاهر بيبرس"، وهي موضوعنا في هذا الكتاب، وسيرى القارئ الكريم في خلال هذا الكتاب سيرة الرجل ويعرف كيف بدأ رحلة الوصول إلى كرسي الحكم في البلاد، والأحداث العظام التي واجهها من معارك كثيرة في مواطن كثيرة.
وهكذا نجد ان السلطان الظاهر بيبرس نجح في التغلب على كل المشاكل التي واجهته سواء بالحيلة أو بالقوة أو بالغدر، وعن طريق تلك النجاحات التي حققها من أواخر عام 1260 حيث إنه اعتلى العرش في أكتوبر من نفس العام وحتى منتصف العام 1261، حيث شعر- وهذا الشعور كان يحس به المحيطين به وأفراد الشعب- انه قد استطاع أن يرسي القواعد المتينة لسلطنته الوليدة، وأيضاً في قدرته على الجهر بأن دولة المماليك البحرية قد ظهرت إلى الوجود بشكل فعلي، وكان السبب الحقيقي لهذا الشعور الذي خالجه تلك الإصلاحات والتغييرات التي أقامها في الدولة، وإذا علمت أن "الظاهر بيبرس" قد ظل طوال سبعة عشرة عاماً في حروب مع المغول والصليبيين عرفت مكانة الجل في التاريخ المصري بوجه الخاص والتاريخ الإسلامي بوجه عام، وأخيراً ستجد في هذا الكتاب الروايات المختلفة لوفاته.
