يضع هذا الكتاب بين يدي الطالب الجامعي جملة من التطبيقات النحوية والصرفية والكتابية والبلاغية والمعجمية على موضوعات كان يدرسها نظرياً ويعوزه التدريب والتطبيق العملي عليها.
وقد شملت التدريبات أبوابا بعينها من النحو والصرف، إما لأنها تمس حاجة الطالب المستهدف بهذا الكتاب، بعد معايشة لحاجاته، ومعرفة للصعوبات التي يواجهها، وإما لتغطية أبواب يقصر المنهج في تغطيتها لكونها آخر ما يدرس عادة، كالاشتغال والإعلال والإبدال.
وتهدف التدريبات الكتابية إلى تمكين الطالب من التعبير السليم عن أفكاره ومشاعره، في المواقف والأشكال الكتابية المختلفة، مستعيناً بما قدم إليه من توجيهات لكتابة الجملة والفقرة وروابطهما، واختبار العنوان ووضع العناصر، ووصف الشخصيات، وابتكار الصور وغيرها من المضامين المساعدة على كتابة النص النثري.
كما يهدف درس الإملاء إلى ممارسة الطالب لكتابة كلمات تشتمل على صعوبات وقواعد إملائية محددة وقفنا على حاجة الطالب إليها من خلال سنوات تدريسنا لهذه الشريحة من الطلاب. وصلنا ذلك بتدريبات في الخط والترقيم رأينا أن المنهج المقرر يغفل عنها على أهميتها.
وراعت الاختيارات الأدبية انتقاء أجود النصوص النثرية والشعرية، مع تحليل تلك النصوص وخدمتها من وجوه مختلفة، ولوحظ في اختيارها أن تمثل فترات متباعدة من الأدب العربي، وأن تتنوع في موضوعاتها، وانتماءاتها، وقائليها واتجاهاتهم الأدبية والفكرية، فشملت الأدب العربي من عصر صدر الإسلام حتى العصر الحديث.
