كان الانتحار منذ كان وعي الإنسان لذاته، ففي اختياره قضم التفاحة الممنوعة عليه استجابة لحواء المستجيبة بدورها لإبليس، سلك آدم مسلكاً رديفاً للانتحار منقلباً على الهه الجبار، الأكبر، وبعيداً عن تلك الرواية وفي اتجاه فكري آخر، فبعد وعي الإنسان أنه يعي، استمر بالمغامرة في حياته عبر صيده أو حربه مع الآخر تنفيذاً لحلم أو أمنية أو لرغبة تستجيب كحب البقاء والأنانية... إذن لا يمكن للحياة أن تستمر دون الانتحار، فالحياة انتحار حتماً والانتحار موت في الوقت المناسب أو المفترض أن يكون في الوقت المناسب، فالإنسان قادر على تحديد زمن موته لحظة يشاء يكي أن بعض العصافير تنتحر ببقائها جامدة أمام الصيادين ترمى نفسها أمام الخطر لترحل عن الدنيا. ويحكى أن الكثير من الحيتان تنتحر في نفسها على اليابسة كمجموعات أضلت طريقها، هي الحياة واحدة إذن، لنا ولكل الكائنات الحية الباقية، شريكتنا في السكن على الرض، ولكن ما هو الانتحار؟ كيف يبدو؟ لماذا ينتحر البعض؟ ما هي آخر التعابير عن معاناة هؤلاء؟ ما علاقة الانتحار بالدين؟ بالاستشهاد؟ بالبرمجة الفكرية؟ ما هو التفسير الاجتماعي والفلسفي والأدبي والنفسي والبيولوجي للانتحار؟ ما هو موقف القانون من الانتحار؟ وما هو تأثير الانتحار في المقربين من المنتحر؟ هل هناك دالة على الانتحار في الكلام والسلوك والإنتاج الفكري واليدوي؟ كل تلك الأسئلة حاول المؤلف الإجابة عليها في هذه القراءة الوصفية لظاهرة الانتحار. في بداية الدراسة حدثنا المؤلف عن أشخاص عرفهم وواكب معاناتهم، ومنهم من مات منتحراً، ومنهم من حاول الانتحار ومنهم من كان انتحاره ميلاداً جديداً وبعد ذلك قدم شرحاً مفصلاً لأشكال الانتحار وأسبابه وكل ما هو على صلة بالانتحار في الحياة اليومية، وفي حسم خاص استعرض المؤلف العلاقة التي تربط الانتحار بالأفكار النظرية المختلفة وخاصة ظاهرة العمليات الاستشهادية مقدماً بعد ذلك قراءة رقمية أحصى فيها عدد المتحرين وعدد المقدمي على الانتحار الفاشل.
