وكتاب مايكل ريوس الذي نقدمه للقارىء هو من كتب السير المتعمقة المحللة والناقدة, فقد استغل فيه الكاتب إنتلاج تشارلز داروين نفسه بكثافة وإنتاج مؤلفين آخرين عن داروين, ومن معاصريه علي وجه الخصوص, ولم يكتف ريتشارد ريوس بمجرد الاشارة من المرجع الذي استقي منه معلوماته, بل اصر وبشكل مكثف ان يورد مقتطفات كثيرة من المراجع المستخدمة, وقد عني ريوس بشكل خاص بكتابات تشارلز داروين من كتابيه المتميزين, "أصل الانواع "و"أصل الإنسان".
وقد اعتمد ريوس علي مراجع كثيرة ترقي بكتابه "ريتشارد داروين" الي مصاف الدراسات العلمية الجادة, كل ذلك بلغة واسلوب عرض شيق متميز, ويجد قارىء الكتاب نفسه وكأنه يستحضر ريوس - المؤلف دائماً أبداً وهو يطالع كتب داروين وكتب الآخرين عنه, وكأن القارىء يطالع في اكثر من كتاب معاً في آن واحد.
