في كتابنا عن داروين نعرض سيرته والتحديات التي تعرض لها من مجتمعه ونبيّن آداب النهج العلمي ثم نشرح بإستفاضة مفاهيم التطور من داروين إلى يومنا هذا، ولعل أبرز وصف يعبر عن الأزمات التي واجهت داروين قولنا: "كان داروين متخوفاً من رد الفعل القاسي للمجتمع العلمي، فتجاهل كلياً موضوع الإنسان في كتابه "أصل الأنواع".
وعلى الرغم من هذا الحذر فإن الجدل احتدم في المجلات والمقالات التي صدرت بعد طبع الكتاب، وفي عام 1871 نشر داروين كتابه "نسب الإنسان والإصطفاء بحسب الجنس" الذي تضمن نظرته حول تطور الإنسان ورأى أن الفروق بين عقل الإنسان وعقل الحيوانات الراقية هي في الدرجة لا في النوعية وإن كل الفروق بين القردة والبشر يمكن تفسيرها على ضوء مجموعة عوامل منها الضغوط الإصطفائية التي واجهها أجدادنا عند إنتقالهم من الأشجار إلى السهول، ومنها الإصطفاء الجنسي.
لم يقصد داروين أبداً إحداث شرخ بين العلم والدين كان يحاول فقط وصف الطبيعة كما رآها، وكثيرون هم الآن الذين يؤمنون بأن تكون متديناً وتقبل الحقائق العلمية في الوقت نفسه يعتقدون أن الله خلق الحياة الأولى على الأرض وأن جميع القوانين المدهشة، بما في ذلك التطور، نتج عن ذلك، أن تقبل بفكرة التطور لا يعني أن تتخلى عن مشاعرك الدينية الخيّرة ومبادئك الروحية السامية".
