اعتاد دارسو الجغرافيا على تصنيف الدراسات الجغرافيّة من حيث الموضوع إلى قسمين: أحدهما طبيعي والآخر بشري، واعتمد الأول على البيئة الطبيعية، أما القسم الثاني فقد اعتمد على الإنسان ونشاطه في تلك البيئة. أما الدراسات العملية والخرائط فهي لا تندرج تحت أحد الموضعين السابقين (الإنسان والبيئة)، وذلك لأنها تمثل الجانب العملي الذي يوضح ويبين العلاقة بين الإنسان وبيئته، وهو الجانب الأساسي والرئيس في الجغرافيا، وتتطلب الخرائط مستوى مهاري معين ممن يمارسها، سواء كان قارئاً أو راسماً لها، وذلك لإرتباطها بعمليات الرصد والقياس والرسم من ناحية، الشرح والتفسير والتحليل من ناحية أخرى، وهي عمليات أساسية في أي عمل علمي جاد. وقد حتمت أهمية الخرائط في الدراسات الجغرافية ضرورة التعرف على أمور عدة مثل كيفية إنشائها، ومعنى مقياس الرسم، ودور مفتاح الخريطة في تفسير ما تحتوي عليه من رموز، وكذلك التعرف على طريقة إستخدام الخريطة وطريقة رسمها، مما كان من الضروري معه الإهتمام بعلم المساحة والإستفادة منه، وذلك ولو بمعرفة أصوله وأسَاسياته فقط. والرسوم البيانية هي جزء مكمّل للخرائط فأحياناً ترسم منفصلة، وأحياناً أخرى يتم تمثيلها على الخرائط، وتتلخص أهمية الرسوم البيانية Graphs في أنها تغنى عن الإسهاب والإسترسال في الشرح، كما أن لها ميزة الرؤية البصرية مثل الخرائط، مما يساعد على حفظ المعلومة وعقد المقارنات بسهولة ويسر. إعتماداً على الأفكار السابقة قدم المؤلف كتابي هذا، ودعمه بالعديد من الأشكال والخرائط حتى يكون عوناً لمن يقرأه، ويستفيد منه الدارسون.
