هل كان لقصة "حي بن يقظان" تأثير في رواية "روبنسون كروزو" للروائي الإنكليزي دانيال ديفو؟ هذا هو السؤال الذي كثر ترديده واختلفت في الإجابة عند الآراء، وهذا الكتاب يطمح إلى الإسهام في كشف بعض الغموض الذي يحيط بهذا الموضوع. لقد قسم المؤلف بحثه إلى ثلاثة أبواب غير التمهيد تناول في الباب الأول جوانب محددة من سيرة ابن طفيل وتحليلاً لقصة "حي بن يقظان". أفرد الباب الثاني لكل من دانيال ديفو ورواية "روبنسون كروزو" ذاكراً أهم الأحداث في حياة ديفو مع دراسة تحليل لرواية "روبنسون كروزو". أما الباب الثالث والأخير فقد كرسه الكاتب لتتبع جهود المترجمين الذين نقلوا القصة إلى اللغتين اللاتينية والإنكليزية وتتبع مصادر أخرى محتملة للتأثير، ثم يتعرض أخيراً لذكر أوجه الشبه بين الروايتين، ويخلص في النتيجة إلى القول بأن هناك ثلاث إجابات، أحدهما تقطع بتأثر ديفو بقصة ابن طفيل، وأخرى تنكر هذا التأثر وتدفعه وثالثة تلف حول الرأي فلا تبديه. ولكي نعرف المزيد لا بد من قراءة هذه الدراسة.
