ليس هذا هو السؤال بالظبط . وغنما قد تكون الصورة الأدق للسؤال هي : ما موقع هذا " الكتاب " بين الكتب الأولى المترجمة - أو حتى المطبوعة - بالعربية ؟ من قام بترجمة الكتاب وطباعته ؟ وكيف ؟ وما قصتة ؟ وماذا فعل هذا المترجم الأول بالنص الإنجليزي في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر ؟ وعن أى طبعة من الطبعات الكثيرة للرواية قام بالترجمة ؟ وبأي مستوى من اللغة العربية ترجم النص الإنجليزي ؟ وإلى أي مدى أدخل تعديلات على النص بحيث يتواءم مع الذائقة القصصية العربية في ذلك الزمان ؟ لا أحد يعرف على وجه التحقيق الظروف التى أحاطت بترجمة هذة الرواية ونشرها ولا من قام بالترجمة . كل ما نعرفه يقينا هو ما تقولة صفحه العنوان من أنها منشورة في مالطة عام 1835 .
