هو أديب وكاتب روائي لبناني راحل. ولد في بحرصاف المتن عام 1911. نال البكالوريا عام 1928. كان متمكنا من اللغة العربية وبدأ بالكتابة للصحف منذ عامه الثامن عشر. درس في كلية القديس يوسف في بيروت ثم واصل دراسته للحقوق في جامعة دمشق. له الكثير من المؤلفات الروائية والقصصية والشعرية. صنفت روايته طواحين بيروت واحدة من أفضل مائة رواية عربية. توفي عام 1988 إثر سقوط قذيفة على مبنى السفارة الإسبانية حيث كان متواجدا مع صهره السفير وابنته، فقتل على الفور مع ابنته الكاتبة ساميا توتونجي.

عندما صدرت "العذارى" للمرة الأولى في 1944 كان توفيق يوسف عواد قد تبوأ مكانته الرفيعة في عالم القصة بما سبق أن صدر له من كتب وأهمها "الصبي الأعرج" و"قميص الصوف" و"الرغيف", و"العذارى" لا تخرج عن السمت الذي اختطه المؤلف لنفسه وتميز به، مع هذه المفارقة وهي أن قصة "العذارى" بالذات-أولى حلقات المجموعة حاملة هذا الاسم_ ترتفع عن المستوى القصصي غلى ما هو أسمى، فتبلغ مستوى الشعر بكل ما فيه من رموز وإيحاءات. ففي نزع وريقات الأقحوانه في لعبة "أتزوج-أترهب" على أيدى أبطال هذه القصة الشفافة المتناهية في الرقة كل لعبة الشعر، وكل لعبة الحب، بل كل لعبة الحياة والموت... ومن "العذارى إلى القرينة" وهي القصة التي تشكل قمة المجموعة بأبطالها وحوادثها ولا سيما بأبعادها الإنسانية التي وراء الخرافات-إلى "بلاد الذهب" إلى "المعلم" إلى "قبر أم" إلى "الكمبيالة الأولى" الخ، يمضي بنا توفيق يوسف عواد متنقلاً في المجتمع اللبناني من صورة غلى صورة ومن قضية إلى قضية. ودائماً في الجو السحري الذي يضفيه قلمه على كل ما يكتب يضاف إلى ذلك أن مجموعة "العذارى" تضم عدة وجوه وحكايات صغيرة هي عبارة عن نتف من الحياة تقطر بالدم والحنان والسخرية.
