قد يطوي التاريخ الأحداث السياسية التي تتعاقب بزخم عنيف في هذه الحقبة من حياة الوطن العربي، فلا يبقى لها ذكر، كما طوى قبلها أحداثاً كثيرة. ولكن مصرع العائلة الهاشمية المالكة في قصر الرحاب ببغداد يوم 14 تموز 1958 ومصرع نوري السعيد رئيس الوزراء، لن يطوي كحدث، ولن يطمس، بل سيظل راسخاً في التاريخ. لقد مر أكثر من أربعين عاماً على مجزرة قصر الرحاب، ومع ذلك ما تزال قصتها غامضة، لم تجر أية محاولة لنشر الحقيقة، على أهميتها في الحقبة التي نعيش، وذيولها العاجلة والآجلة بالرغم من الكتب التي صدرت خلال هذه الفترة، ومن أجل ذلك استقينا من مصادر كثيرة وتحريناً عن أدق تفاصيلها من منابعها الأصلية. وقد عانينا الشيء الكثير حتى نتمكن من الحصول على أسرارها ووقائعها. والمجزرة وقعت، في حديقة قصر الرحاب أمام عشرات من الشهود لذلك كان من السهل اقتفاء آثار بعضهم، ولكن الوصول إليهم كان مهمة شاقة، ومع كل ذلك استطعنا قدر المستطاع أن نقدم للقارئ الكريم تفاصيل دقيقة لليلة الأخيرة لهذه المجزرة.
