يرى لونوار في كتابه هذا أن سبينوزا وفلسفته وتجربته الشخصية تقدم «أفضلَ طريقٍ ممكنٍ إلى الخلاصِ» لكل أفراد المجتمع في هذا العالم الذي يقف على حافة الانهيار، إذ تهتز الديمقراطيات العريقة، وتنتشر النزاعات الطائفية ونزاعات الهوية والحزبية في كل أرجاء العالم. ففي هذا الكتاب يقدم لونوار «درسا فلسفيا وأخلاقيا» يطلق عليه «المعجزةِ السبينوزيةِ» وهو ليس تحليلا أكاديميا صارما يُقدم لمختصي الفلسفة دون غيرهم، بل هُو درسٌ أخلاقي يستخلصه المثقف العادي ويستنير به في علاقاته الاجتماعية والسياسية. ذلك هو ما يوثق علاقة الفلسفة بالحياة اليومية، ويربط بين «النظرية والتطبيق». فبالنسبة إلى لونوار، لا يتطلب تبني رؤية فلسفية ما للعالم والإنسان والحياة لدى قطاع كبير من المثقفين معرفة دقيقة بالنظرية الفلسفية، التي نشأ ذلك الموقفُ في إطارها. تبرز رسالة سبينوزا الفلسفية ودرسه الإيطيقي في رحلته الشخصية، كما يقول الكاتب: «فإذا أردنا أن نعرف معنى المعجزة السبينوزية، يكفي أن ندرك أننا أمام شخص له سمات خاصة: شخص «ظل وفيا لحُب الحقيقة، مُفضلا حريةَ التفكيرِ على طُمأنينةِ العائلة والطائفة، وعلى الاِنْسياقِ للفكرِ السائدِ. لقد كانَ ضَحيةَ أبْشعِ الانتهاكات، تم التنكر له من قِبَلِ أَهْلِه وعَاشَ تحْتَ التهديدِ المتواصِل، ولكنهُ بَقِي وفِيا دائما للخط المُوَجهِ لمَسيرَتِهِ. كان عُرْضة للكَراهِيةِ ولكِنهُ لمْ يَكْره أبدا. تَعرضَ للغَدْرِ ولكنه لم يغدر أبَدا. تَعرضَ للسخريَة ولكنه لم يستَخِف بأحَدٍ قَط. تَم شتمُهُ في كثيرٍ مِن الأحْيانِ ولكن ردهُ كان دائما هو الاحترام. عاشَ دائما باعتدال وكرامة وفي انسجام مع أَفكاره».
