يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن حقوق المرأة في النظام الإسلامي من باب نظام حقوق الأسرة بشكل عام، ويناقش مسألة أساسية في هذا الباب وهي "حرية المرأة" و "حق المساواة" بين المرأة والرجل، فهل الحقوق الطبيعية والإنسانية للمرأة والرجل متشابهة. يعتبر العلامة "مرتضى مطهري" أن الإسلام لم يمنح الرجل والمرأة حقوقاً من نوع واحد ولون واحد لكنه في ذات الوقت لم يفضل الرجل على المرأة في الحقوق " ... لقد راعى مبدأ المساواة في الإنسانية بين الرجل والمرأة ... ولكنه لا يقر تشابه هذه الحقوق .. إن كلمات مثل – التساوي – المساواة لكونها تتضمن مفهوم عدم التمييز قد حازتا على قدسية خاصة ولها جاذبية معينة فهما تجتذبا احترام السامع وخاصة إذا أضيفت إليها عبارة الحقوق واقترنت بها (...) حملة العلم عليهم أن يوضحوا للناس الفرق بين المساواة والتشابه حتى لا يقع الناس في لبس من هذه المسألة المقدسة والحساسة وحتى لا تقع تحت ضغط نظريات الغربيين وفلسفاتهم لأنه لا يجوز أن يستمر هذا الخلط وتختلط المفاهيم علينا. ومن المسلمات عندنا أن الإسلام الذي وضع قانون المساواة لم يضع حقوقاً متشابهة...". وهنا يثور التساؤل هل حقوق المرأة أقل قيمة من حقوق الرجل؟ بالطبع لا وهو ما سيبرهن عليه هذا الكتاب من خلال (33) مقالة يناقش فيها العلامة "مطهري" مسائل هامة من وجهة نظر الشرع الإسلامي نذكر بعضاً من عناوينها: الخطبة، والزواج المؤقت (المتعة)، المرأة والإستقلال الإجتماعي، مكانة المرأة في القرآن، المهر والنفقة، الإرث، الطلاق، تعدد الزوجات، حق حكم الرجل في الأسرة، حق حضانة الطفل، المرأة والسياسة، لباس المرأة، الأخلاق الجنسية: الغيرة، العفاف، الحياء وغير ذلك، مقام الأمومة، عمل المرأة، ... الخ.
