يضم هذا الكتاب، مجموعة دروس الأستاذ المطهري تحت عنوان (هدف الحياة)، وهي حلقة من دروس في (النظرة الإسلامية للكون) ألقيت عام 1972م. وقد كانت مسألة "النظرة الإسلامية للكون" وعرضها على جيل الشباب -آنذاك- من المواضيع التي تشد إليها المتدينين المثقفين، مما دعا الأستاذ المطهري لأن يطرح فيها بعض الخطوط العريضة استجابة لرغبة بعض طلبته الذين شكلوا حلقة دراسية لا تتجاوز العشرة أشخاص. وقد اعتاد الأستاذ دائماً أن يطرح بحوثه ومواضيعه -في جلسات صغيرة أو موسعة- مرات، لتقع موقع النقد التام، وتصقل صقلاً يؤهلها للعرض النهائي على المجتمع، وحينئذ يبدأ بتأليف الكتاب المطرب بأسلوبه الجذاب. وهذا بالضبط ما جرى لبحث (مقدمة في النظرة الكونية الإسلامية)، والذي كتبه في صيف 1978م بشكل ملخص مركز في سبعة أجزاء، نشرت تباعاً. يدرس الأستاذ في هذه البحوث (هدف الحياة) من وجهة نظر القرآن والمدارس والأفكار البشرية، ويفتح آفاق البحث في كل جهة، ويطلق للفكر عنانه في مجالاته المختلفة، ذلك أن هدف القرآن إذا وضح للفكر الإنساني بالنحو الذي رسمه القرآن، استطاع أن يلقي بأضوائه على الحياة فينيرها، ويبعث فيها حرارته فيحيلها حياة أخرى تهفو لها البشرية اليوم.
