كذلك كان التشتت والانقسام الذي يعيشه بطل الرواية، المدمن، ابن الأسرة المرموقة والمحترمة. وهو خريج جامعي في العقد الثاني من عمره، غاضب، حاد، ساخر، متمرد، ضعيف، يائس، مستسلم، خاوٍ، ومستميت إلى أبعد الحدود.
وهو على امتداد صفحات الرواية يصف حالته كمدمن بأدق تفاصيلها، وحياة العبث والضياع التي يعيشها، وتورطه بعدة جرائم جعلته مطلوباً في أكثر من ولاية، ثم خضوعه للعلاج في المصح الذي يفرض قوانين لا بد من الالتزام بها.. وغير ذلك من التفاصيل التي يعايشها مدمن مخدرات في طريقه إلى الشفاء.
أما أسلوبه في الرواية يبدو أنه نابع من هستيريا الإدمان: جمل قصيرة، سريعة، خاطفة، تعبيرات تتماشى مع التدفق الشعوري، وصف، انفعالات، تكرارات؛ وكأن فراي يصب هذيانه المحموم على الورق.
