إن اعتبار الشعر واقعة ،كغيرها من الوقائع ظن قابلة للملاحظة علميا،والتحديد كميا يؤدي ضرورة إلى صدم الإحساس العام . فالشعر اليوم في درجة من التقديس تظهر معها كل محاولة للكشف عن آلياته بمظهر التدنيس. علم الشعر؟ إنها عبارة تحمل من القدح بقدر ما تحمله من المفارقة ، ذلك أن العمل والشعر، كما اعترفنا بذلك نحن أنفسنا ، يوجدان على طرفي نقيض . ولكن يجب أن نفضح ، مرة أخرى ، الخلط المتجدد على الدوام بين الملاحظة و الواقعة الملاحظة . فالشعر يعارض العلم كواقعة ، غير أن هذه المعارضة لا تمس في شيء المنهج المتبنى للملاحظة . فالفرق بين التنجيم وبين علم الفلك لا يوجد في النجوم و إنما يوجد في ذهن الإنسان الذي يدرسها .وليس في الواقعة الشعرية ، في ذاتها ، ما يعارض معارضة مسبقة محاولة الملاحظة و الوصف العلميين. ولاشك أن الأمر هنا في غاية التعقيد و الغموض و الشفافية.
