أشارت معظم النماذج النظرية إلى أن الأفراد لديهم خصائص ثابتة نسبياً تؤثر في التفكير والمشاعر والسلوك وتميزهم عن الآخرين، وقد بنى علماء نفس الشخصية مثل: جيلفورد، وإيزيك، وكاتل المئات من مقاييس السمات، كما أن لغة الحياة اليومية تتضمن الآلاف من السمات مثل الحماسة، والأصالة والتي تشير لخصائص الشخصية، وأصبحت المشكلة الأساسية في علم نفس السمات هي كيفية توجيه هذا التنوع في بنية السمات وتنطيمها في عوامل أو أبعاد واسعة، ويعتبر نموذج العوامل الخمسة Five - Foctor Model (FFM) امتداداً لنظريات الشخصية، فقد نجح في تحديد الأبعاد الرئيسية للشخصية مما يجعله قد قدم لغة مشتركة لدراسة الشخصية، وشرحاً وتفسيراً لهذه الأبعاد في إطار واضح ومنظم تتمثل في خمسة عوامل رئيسية هي:- العصابية Neuroticism ، والانبساط Extraversion, والموافقة Agreeableness, ويقظة للخبرات Openness To Experince, وذلك في محاولة لوضع إطار نظري متكامل لأبعاد الشخصية تمكنه من جمع الدراسات والنظريات وتوظيفها من خلال هذا النموذج.
