إن كل ما يصدر عن الإنسان من نتاج هو في نهاية المطاف مرآة تعكس في نفس مبدعها وآراءه في أحوال المجتمع. وهذه الأعمال نتاج سيكولوجي يعكس بناء صاحبها السيكولوجي، كما أن العمل الفني، كما يذهب فرويد، ينطوي على لب أو جوهر بشري عام، يتم تطويعه وفقاً لظروف الواقع الاجتماعي وهذا يعبر عن مضمون الإسقاط Projection بالمعنى الدقيق للاصطلاح. فالإسقاط هو اصطلاح من التحليل النفسي يشير إلى عملية دفاعية ينسب الأنا بواسطتها ما لا يرضى عنه من الأفكار، والنزعات والمخاوف التي تنتمي إلى الشخص ذاته. سواء منها ما ينتمي إلى الهو أو الأنا الأعلى، إلى الغير. فمن السهل عليه مواجهة الخطر الصادر من الغير إما بالهرب أو الامتناع عن إدراكه أو مغالبته والتصدي له.
ويلعب الإسقاط دوراً في الأمراض العصابية والذهانية كذلك نجد الإسقاط عندما يرى الشخص السوي، العالم بوحي من مشاعره؛ فالسعيد يرى العالم باسماً ضاحكاً، في حين يتوجس الخائف المرتاع مما يحيط به، وفي كلتا الحالتين يسهل على الشخص أن يتبين أن مشاعره هي سبب هذا التصور للواقع الخارجي، ومهما يكن من أمر فقد كشفت الوسائل الإسقاطية التي يمكن سبر غور الدوافع مراراً وتكراراً عن المحددات العميقة والتي ربما كانت لا شعورية للتعبير عن الذات والتي لا يمكن الكشف عنها بوضوح من خلال الحديث المباشر.
ورأى علماء النفس أنه من الأسلم افتراض أن كل نشاط إبداعي يحمل الطابع الخاص للصراع وللحاجات التي تضغط على الفرد القائم بالإبداع. من هنا كان النشاط الذي يستثار استجابة للتعليمات التي مؤداها "ارسم شخصاً" هو بالفعل خبرة إبداعية كما سيثبت ذلك من خلال الشخص الذي يرسم. وتدل الخبرة الشاملة والمركزة مع رسوم الشكل الإنساني على وجود ارتباط وثيق الصلة بين الشكل المرسوم وبين شخصية الفرد الذي يرسمه.
ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي تحاول المؤلفة من خلاله جاهدة إيجاز منهج في تحليل الشخصية يقوم على تفسير رسوم الشكل الإنساني. هذا وإن ما سيزود به قطاع علم النفس التحليلي عمل المؤلفة في تحليل الرسم هو درجة من التنظيم في تحليل المنتج الخطي (الرسم) تكون شاملة وقابلة للنقل وتقدر تعقيدات الشخصية حق قدرها.
