علم العروض هو علم تعرف به صحة أوزان الشعر العربي، حيث تعرض عليه فيكشف مواطن الخلل فيها، وبذلك يتبين موزون الشعر من مختله، فيأمن -حينذاك- الناظم من اختلاط البحور بعضها ببعض. الكتاب، كما يقول مؤلفاه، محاولة لتقريب مادة علم العروض للطلاب، وتخفيف جفافها. ولتحقيق ذلك اعتمد ثلاثة أمور تعتبر ميزات في هذا الكتاب:1-تزويد الكتاب بشواهد شائقة هادفة من عيون الشعر العربي، تحرك العواطف وتغذي العقول.2-الإكثار من التطبيقات العملية لترسيخ المادة في عقول الطلاب. 3-عرض المادة بطريقة ميسرة مبسطة وفق منهج علمي. وقد ساعدهما في ذلك خبرة طويلة في تدريس المادة لمختلف المستويات، فجاء كتابهما رائداً لا يستغني عنه طالب ولا مدرس.
