الطلاق مشكلة إجتماعية قديمة - حديثة في نفس الوقت، من حيث قدمها فقد عاشتها المجتمعات القديمة وتطرقت إليها مختلف الديانات السماوية وأرست قواعد تنظيمها، أما حداثتها فليست في كون الطلاق ظاهرة إجتماعية غير سوية، ولكن في الأبعاد والخيوط الجديدة التي تتشابك في نسجها بنائياً من ميل إلى آخر، ومن مجتمع لآخر، ومن عصر لآخر، فالطلاق يبدو ذا علاقة بقضية المرأة ووضعها الإجتماعي والإقتصادي في مختلف المجتمعات وإن اختلفت درجة الإرتباط.
ومن ناحية أخرى يبدو الطلاق ذا علاقة بالمشاكل متعددة الجوانب التي تواجه الجنسين سواء في مقتبل حياتهم الزواجية أم في مراحلها المتقدمة؛ ومن ناحية ثالثة يجوز النظر للطلاق كنتاج للصراع الإجتماعي سواء أكان بين الذكور والإناث كعناصر في المجتمع أو في أشكال الصراع الذي يقع في نطاق الأسرة أيا كان شكل البنية والتنظيم اللذين تقوم عليهما.
ومن ناحية رابعة يبدو أن لظاهرة الطلاق علاقة فيما يحدث من تغير إجتماعي - ثقافي في مجتمع معين وفي زمان معين وبالتالي تغير في الإتجاهات والسلوك بين أفراد المجتمع وجماعاته وطبقاته الإجتماعية.
ويهدف هذا البحث لدراسة ظاهرة الطلاق في المجتمع العربي السعودي ولتحليل العوامل المؤدية للطلاق في الأسرة السعود المعاصرة مستخدماً بيانات وثيقة محكمة الضمان والأنكحة التي تقوم بجمعها الهيئة القضائية بالمحكمة، كما تستخدم هذه الدراسة البيانات التكميلية التي قامت بجمعها الباحثة على عينة من حالات الطلاق التي نظرت في محكمة الضمان والأنكحة بمدينة الرياض، كما أن الباحثة قد قامت بتحليل البيانات المنشورة عن حالات الطلاق والتي وردت في إحصاءات وزارة العدل والبيانات التي وردت ضمن نتائج التعدد السكاني الثاني للمملكة والذي أجرى في عام 1394هــ.
