يُعتبر الشاعر الأميركي ويليام ستانلي ميروين وحده من حاز جائزة بوليتزر للشعر مرتين، تكّرس بعدها شاعراً رسمياً للدولة الأميركية، أو أمير شعراء أميركا في لغة العرب. من مواليد 1927، برزت موهبته باكراً في الشعر والأقصوصة، لكنه لم يستعجل النشر. وسنة 1952 صدر ديوانه الأول «قناع لجانوس» فأحدث وقعاً مدوياً في الأوساط الأدبية لما فيه من ثراء لفظي ومتانة لغوية محتشدة بمؤثرات من ت. س. إليوت والتراث الأوروبي العريق. كان التجديد هاجسه الأول، وسرعان ما تخطى ميروين المؤثرات الأليوتية خالصاً إلى ابتكار صوته الخاص. كان ديوانه الرابع «الدريئة المتحركة» الصادر سنة 1969 بمثابة قفزة شاهقة في سماء الشعر عموماً، نسف عبره أسس النقد المستتبة، ومعظمها مبني على الشكلانية الجمالية المنضبطة، فحرر القصيدة من كل شيء عدا الشعر الخام المتماسك من مفاصله الداخلية، بصرف النظر عن تكريس وحدة عضوية للقصيدة. وشكل ديوان «المطر في الأشجار» الصادر سنة 1987 منعطفاً آخر في الاتجاه نفسه ولكن عبر توطيد نظرته الكونية الشاملة للوجود والإنسان وغوصه اللامحدود في عوالم الماء والنبات كما في الأساطير المنوطة بحكايات البحر والسفر في المحيطات على غرار أوديسوس أو يوليسيس، كما أسماه الرومان.
