يروى الكتاب فى قالب روائى الأيام الأخيرة من حياة هيباتيا، الفيلسوفة السكندرية التى اغتيلت بطريقة وحشية فى عام 415 م. فيما يتعلق بالوقائع المحققة يلتزم الكتاب الأمانة التاريخية، أما قصة الحب التخيلية فيعالجها المؤلف فى إيماءات، يرسمها بلمسات خفيفة، من خلال ومضات من الذكرى تستثيرها أحداث فى قصتى حب حزينتين لاثنتين من تلميذات هيباتيا. وتلى القصة المأساوية، فى القسم الثانى من الكتاب، مجموعة من مقتطفات تخيلية من محاضرات وأحاديث الفيلسوفة. والفلسفة التى تتضمنها هذه المحاضرات والأحاديث التخيلية هى، صراحة، للمؤلف، ويتأتى هذا بالضرورة لكوننا قد فقدنا كل أعمال هيباتيا الفلسفية، بفضل الكنيسة التى عملت على إبادة هذه المؤلفات تماما. وإذا كان التصوير الحي للمأساة الدامية لـ هيباتيا سيقابل بلاغضب من بعض الجهات، فإن المؤلف لا يجد مبررا للاعتذار، ذلك أن تلك الجريمة الوحشية البشعة هى بمثابة جرح غائر فى ضمير الإنسانية، يجب أن نظل نحسه نابضا بالألم إذا لم نرد له أن يقيح فيسمم جسم الإنسانية بكامله.
